Special Event - A Presentation on the Recent Situation in South Sudan

Members of the Collingwood All Stars community are invited to a presentation by

Akech Manyiel

who will speak about his recent trip to South Sudan.

Last year the club organised fundraising to support projects in South Sudan. Akech, our Community Liaison Officer, planned to visit his home village Yirol East for the first time in 27 years over the Summer and Club members generously helped him raise funds to restore the basketball court during that visit.

Due to the recent  outbreak of political unrest in Sudan, Akech was not able to complete the project. He did however risk visiting South Sudan for a short period of time to be reunited with his mother who he had not seen since he was six years old.

At this presentation Akech will show photos and be interviewed on stage by Tony Corr and will discuss

  • The recent political instability in South Sudan and the impacts it is having on both his family and the South Sudanese Population
  • His first-hand experience visiting South Sudan over the Christmas period
  • His future plans for building the basketball court in Yirol East
  • The effects the recent political unrest  is having on the South Sudanese Community in Melbourne

Akech is a wonderful presenter and this event provides an opportunity formembers of the Collingwood Basketball Association to gain a greater insight and understanding of the experiences and background of the South Sudanese members of our club.
