Third Quarter Secures Redbacks Win

The Perth Redbacks’ State Basketball League Men’s team had a hard-fought 113 to 95 win over the tough Perry Lakes Hawks combination.

The win was secured by a 44-point third quarter, highlighted by shooting guard Jarrad Prior producing four straight three-point shots in a two minute burst and point-guard Jarrad Jackson scoring 14.

Centre Dennis Tawhiti had a standout game for the Redbacks scoring 27 at a field goal percentage of 69 along with 13 rebounds.

Prior was their next highest scorer on 21 including six three-pointers at 55%, while Jackson scored 19 at 60% and point-guard Joel Wagner had 10 assists.

Coach Nik Lackovic considered the win an excellent result against a team he feels will be a playoff contender.

“Each week the guys are becoming more settled with their roles and Friday night’s game was a great example of that with five players scoring in double figures.

“Dennis Tawhiti was outstanding throughout the entire game and his work rate for four quarters was fantastic and Jarrad Prior and Jarrad Jackson ignited us offensively in the third quarter,” he said.

The win sees the Redbacks’ men with two wins and one loss and in fifth-place in the 14-team competition.

The Redbacks’ Women’s State Basketball League team took the game right up to the Hawks but were eventually worn down in the last quarter losing 53 to 71.

This sees them in 12th place with no wins and three losses.

Forward Jess Jakens scored 10 along with nine rebounds while point-guard Ariel Marusak had 10 along with four rebounds and three assists.

Forward Latoya Wallace also scored 10 and had three rebounds while guard Jess Hughes scored a career best eight along with six rebounds.

Coach Stuart Budd said his team showed they could match any team at times in their match against the Hawks.

“We were inconsistent throughout the game, which will happen with young and very inexperienced players at the highest level.

The inconsistency comes more from the pressure created within the players themselves, not necessarily from the other team,” he said

The State Basketball League action continues this Saturday at Belmont Oasis when the Redbacks take on Mandurah Magic, with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
