Redbacks Sweet Revenge

The Perth Redbacks’ Men’s State Basketball League team had a strong 100 to 93 home-game win against last year’s grand finalists the Wanneroo Wolves.

This was a spectacular turnaround following their 32-point away-game loss to the Wolves just two weeks earlier.

Redbacks’ forward Stan Okoye was the game-high scorer with 36 along with 12 rebounds and four steals.

Point-guard Joel Wagner was their next highest scorer with 19 and nine assists, while small forward Jarrad Prior scored 13 and five rebounds and fellow small forward Jamieson Lewis put in 10 points.

The win sees the Redbacks move up to fifth-place in the 14-team competition with five wins and three losses.

The Redbacks’ women’s team showed real improvement against the top-four placed Wolves, but ultimately still went down 51 to 66.

It was yet another inconsistent third quarter, in which they were outscored by 10 points, that cost the young Redbacks' outfit the chance of securing their first win of the year.

Forward Jess Jakens was their top-scorer with 18 along with six rebounds while centre Alix Hayward had yet another ‘double-double’ with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Coach Stuart Budd was generally pleased with his teams overall performance and improvement.

“Through hard work at training, the advancement of the players is starting to show through at game time,” he said.

After eight rounds the women remain in 12th-place in the 12-team competition.

This Saturday the Redbacks take on the Perry Lakes Hawks at the WA Basketball Centre, with the women’s game tipping off at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
