Six Wins Straight, Now the Playoffs

The Perth Redbacks’ Men’s State Basketball League team had a strong 128 to 103 away-game win against the Willetton Tigers.

This was their sixth straight win and sees them end the qualifying round series in third-place in the 14-team competition with 17 wins and nine losses.

Redbacks’ forward Stan Okoye dominated the boards in scoring 34 while bringing down 13 rebounds, making three assists and blocking two shots.

Power-forward Lee Roberts had 33 points and 13 rebounds, while centre Dennis Tawhiti scored 23 at a phenomenal field goal percentage of 73 along with 10 rebounds.

The Redbacks’ men’s team will now play the sixth-placed Mandurah Magic in the best of three quarter-final playoff series.

Playoff schedules have yet to be released by the League, but the first game will be played at Mandurah this weekend with all remaining games required being played at the Redbacks’ home venue of Belmont Oasis Leisure and Aquatic Centre the following weekend.

The Redbacks’ Women’s team took the game right up to the Tigers, who have qualified for the playoffs, but eventually went down 69 to 76.

Guard Gabby O’Sullivan was their top-scorer with 19 along with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Forward Jess Jakens scored 16 and had eight rebounds while centre Alix Hayward had 14 points along with nine rebounds.

This young group of steadily developing players have ended the season with two wins and 20 losses and, because of their negative head-to-head results against the East Perth Eagles who also had the same win/loss record, narrowly finish in last place in the 12-team competition.
