DEAFLYMPICS 2012 - Update

DSA Full Members,

As some of you may be aware, five ICSD Members submitted a request for ICSD to stage an Extraordinary Congress in Moscow, Russia in June 2012, led by Sweden and the United States. In their request, they cited a number of reasons - mainly regarding lack of communication, issues regarding the 2013 Deaflympic Games, minutes from the 2011 Rome Congress etc. A couple of videos have gone on Youtube explaining this in detail.

Deaf Sports Australia has considered this request and have decided NOT to support this request. The main reasons being:

  • the proposed date for the Extraordinary Congress clashes with the Asia Pacific Games for the Deaf in Seoul, Korea (a major issue for all Asia Pacific nations)
  • ICSD held a Congress only six months ago in Rome, Italy with agreed actions/outcomes that ICSD is still implementing
  • ICSD Members elected the ICSD Board at the Taipei 2009 Congress on a four-year term and it is our intention to let them serve out the full four years, and we can judge them at the 2013 Congress (venue TBC)

Additionally, in our response, we made an explicit request to ICSD to improve their communications with ICSD Members as we felt this was lacking.

In order for an Extraordinary Congress to be held, one third of ICSD Members (approximately 30-35) has to support this. Responses from ICSD Members closes today. More and more nations have come out and rejected this proposal. We are awaiting the final outcome and will keep you posted.

We are concerned about the 2012 Deaflympic Games, however ICSD has given an update on this on their Youtube channel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5hbOW-60AQ&feature=related), including the possibility of a Russian or Bulgarian Games in either 2013 or 2014, or remaining with Hungary and raise the possibility of a 700-euro 'levy' on each athlete to balance the budget. DSA is in discussions with ICSD to get as much information as possible, which we will share with you all.

Drop me a line if you have any queries. Please share this with your committee/members.

Regards,

Brent Phillips
