ANNOUNCEMENT - Geckos qualify for 2017 Deaflympics!
Deaf Basketball Australia received advice from Deaf Sports Australia on 4th December 2014 that the organising committee of the Asia Pacific Deaf Games in October 2015 had received final registrations from 3 countries intending to send teams for the womens basketball competition, and as a result of that low number, the womens basketball compeition was cancelled.
Australia, Chinese Taipei and Japan as a result have now qualified for the 2017 Deaflympics in womens basketball, as a result of sending final registrations to the organising committee of 2015 Asia Pacific Deaf Games.
While Deaf Basketball Australia did not see this coming, it somewhat alleviates the disappointment knowing our Geckos program can now focus on preparing for the 2017 Deaflympics, with over two and a half years to go. DBA will now work with Janelle Bressow, head coach of the Goannas, to ensure the Geckos program has an updated training schedule including tournaments to help prepare for Samsun, Turkey in July 2017.
With this exciting development, Deaf Basketball Australia will be on the look out for any skilled womens basketball players with a hearing loss of at least 55Db in the better ear - so if you fit the bill and want to achieve your dream of playing for Australia, contact Deaf Basketball Australia on the email below:
