FIXTURE - Goannas to step out for first time under Brent Reid

The National Deaf Mens Basketball team, the Goannas, are currently in preparations to go to the World Deaf Basketball Championships, in July 2015, as well as the Asia Pacific Deaf Games in October 2015.

Two major international tournaments in the space of 4 months is unheard of, and this represents one of the biggest challenges in DBA's history.

The Goannas have competed on the international scene since the 80's, achieving commendable results in the face of financial hardship and playing against seasoned and match hardened European and American opponents, who have regular international exposure. The Goannas best result was achieved in 2005, where they came 4th in a field of 11 countries at the Melbourne Deaflympics - a remarkable result at their home Deaflympics. Since then, the Goannas have strived to maintain the same high standards at subsequent international tournaments while undergoing a development phase in their program, achieving credible results at the 2011 Asia Pacific Deaf Games as well as the 2013 Deaflympics.

The experience and international exposure gained from the past two international tournaments has the core of the Goannas team primed to make their mark on the international scene, starting in July with the Worlds in Taoyuan, Chinese Taipei and 4 months later, at the Asia Pacific Deaf Games in the same city.

Deaf Basketball Australia are privileged to have the support of Warrandyte Venom and their Big V Youth League side as the Goannas test their fitness, skills and match experience in a friendly. Whether it will be friendly remains to be seen, given the defensive nous of the Goannas' head coach, Brent Reid which gives the Goannas team some steely resolve to fight to the end for the win.

Sunday 8th February @ 12:30pm
1 Drysdale Road, Warrandyte VIC 3113
$3 door entry - funds raised goes towards Goannas' costs to attend the Worlds and Asia Pacific Deaf Games. The team does not receive any Government funding and all expenses come out of the athletes pockets.

This game will mark the first of many games in the public arena for the Goannas, and under Brent Reid, it is hoped that the Goannas are able to acquit themselves well as they go on the road to Taoyuan.

Deaf Basketball Australia would like to acknowledge the fantastic support of Warrandyte Venom and wish their Big V teams all the best for season 2015. Many of our players and supporters will follow your club's successes closely!
