ANNOUNCEMENT - Board given support to continue its work

The 2015 Annual General Meeting, attended by Deaf Basketball Victoria and Queensland Deaf Basketball Association delegates, was held at the JML Room at Vicdeaf on Saturday 25th July 2015. The AGM was one of the three sessions hosted by Deaf Basketball Australia over the weekend.

The main business of this AGM, the elections, was conducted and the following were elected unopposed:

  • President - Bryn Davies
  • Vice President - Thomas Andrews
  • Treasurer - Rod Crick

The Board will approach experienced and passionate people to fill the position of Secretary, and the Board member positions over the next few months.

Aside from the usual elections, the AGM also saw some discussion on the Constitution which saw amendments made, as well as focus on some General Business items covering communications, national teams and Australian Deaf Games and National Deaf Basketball Club Championships.

By all reports, the AGM was conducted in an open and casual manner, with all delegates able to have their input in discussions. This open manner also flowed through to the remainder of the weekend, where two workshops were held - the future of basketball competitions in Australia, particularly the next Australian Deaf Games in January 2016 and the National Deaf Basketball Club Championships, as well as a strategy planning workshop for the next 12 months and 4 years of Deaf Basketball Australia.

These two workshops proved critical as they allowed for the Board of Deaf Basketball Australia and the affiliated state bodies, DBV and QDBA (NSWDBC provided input via email prior to the weekend) to work together and come out with an united and clear direction for the future of deaf basketball in Australia. This future, in one word, is BRIGHT.

The DBA Strategic Plan for 2015-2019 will be drafted up and sent out to stakeholders such as the Goannas and Geckos coaching staff, Deaf Sports Australia and Basketball Australia for their comment. Once finalised, the 2015-2019 Strategic Plan will be cemented and provide a blueprint for the DBA Board to follow. This Plan will be uploaded to the website under the Documents section, as well as the 2015 AGM minutes.

Regarding the ADG in 2016, there will be an announcement on the website as well as DBA's social media channels shortly but it is looking very good at the moment! Further down the track, around October/ November, DBA will also outline the plans surrounding the National Deaf Basketball Club Championships, as it is clear that all affiliated state bodies want it returned on an annual basis where possible - stay tuned!

Deaf Basketball Australia would like to thank Vicdeaf for the use of its venue for the weekend, as well as Ben Richardson, Marc Ethan and Sagenta Cummings for their interpreting through the weekend, and lastly, all the delegates who attended the three sessions over the weekend in setting DBA in a positive direction over the next 4 years!
