At grounds right across Victoria last weekend paused to celebrate Community Umpire Round.
The initiative is designed to recognise those patrolling the boundary, manning the goal line and controlling the action out in the middle each week, and the huge role they play in our game.
There are more than 7,000 registered umpires in Victoria at community level, along with thousands of club-based umpires, who commit their time and energy to allow those chasing the sherrin the chance to do so.
To mark the occasion, the AFL Umpire Squad will forgo their usual training session and instead disband and travel to regional centres to join in sessions with local umpiring groups.
Through the V/Line Umpire Academy, talented whistle blowers are given a chance to develop their skills and knowledge of the game under expert local coaches but nothing beats having the chance to train alongside, and learn from, those at the elite level.
In another fantastic initiative, selected Victorian umpires will lead out their AFL counterparts at AFL matches in Round 7 and enjoy a taste of the atmosphere created at the MCG, Etihad Stadium and Simonds Stadium.
Community Umpire Round is also another opportunity to encourage those who want to be involved in the greatest game in the world to take up umpiring. If you are new to the game, or your playing days are over, than umpiring is a great way to contribute to community football.
Across Victoria, huge efforts are being made to attract umpires with AFL CEO earlier this month officially launching a Multicultural Umpire Academy in Shepparton.
Along with those from diverse backgrounds, females are also flocking to take up umpiring in impressive numbers with last week’s TAC Cup all-female umpiring panel illustrating their growing prominence in the game.
This weekend’s WorkSafe Country Championships will also prove a significant occasion for hundreds of community umpires, who have been appointed to officiate in the 18 blockbuster matches across Victoria.
