The biggest change to hit not only the GOTAFE GVFL but every league in the state (bar one) in most recent memory has been the introduction of AFL Victoria’s Community Club Sustainability Program (CCSP).
Last weekend saw all 12 clubs for the first time as a collective play under the new player points system.
A bit of background on the points system for those that are unaware of its implementation.
Throughout discussions with a large majority of Metropolitan Leagues and Region Commissions the view was that the implementation of the Player Points System (PPS) and the Players Salary Cap (PSC) in potentially the same year, would be too much for Clubs and that there needed to be a more phased in approach. Given the feedback suggested the Players Salary Cap program required further detail and investigation, the belief was it will be best suited to a 2017 implementation, with training and education relating to the salary cap to begin across the 2016 season.
AFL Goulburn Murray had been working with all Leagues throughout 2015 to establish a platform for implementation of the CCSP in 2016. The GVFL, MFL and KDFNL all supported the introduction of a Total Points Cap in 2016 with the PDFNL being the only League affiliated to AFL Victoria which has rejected the program in its entirety.
Data was collected across all Leagues for point’s allocations and salary cap information with workshops in the GVFL presenting information back to clubs for deliberation. From these sessions proposed points caps have been evaluated and determined.
Following the GVFL Delegates meeting held on Monday 24 August the following was decided as a position of GVFL clubs for the CCSP based on the data which had been collected for season 2016 (45 points).
With last week being the first week all 12 clubs were playing it was interesting to see the point’s allocation per club which can be seen below.

With the points system being the first step ensuring clubs are able to be sustainable the next 12 months will be watched closely as the introduction of the salary cap will slowly take shape.
