Billy Cooper was born to play football especially when you consider his bloodlines.
He is the grandson of Goulburn Valley League Football League “Hall of Fame” inductee Gary Cooper.
The talented 17-year-old says he welcomes the pressure of being the grandson of a legend.
“Every-time you read the paper, and I am mentioned, I referred to the grandson of a legend, but that doesn’t bother me,” he said.
“I actually like those expectations. It makes me feel good.”
Cooper says he has a very simple motto for his football.
“I just want to have as good a season as I can,” he says.
This rising star has been exposed to many different opportunities during his short career, including representative duties and then two years of regular senior football with his junior club Shepparton East.
He is a winner and there is no surprise he has settled in to Goulburn Valley League.
Cooper debuted in the round one win against Mooroopna before receiving a call-up to the TAC Cup to play with the Murray Bushrangers.
He says his axing after one game spurred him on the weekend to make a statement.
And he didn’t disappoint, playing well in the team’s upset win against Rochester.
The Year 12 Wanganui Park Secondary College student believes the belief is within the group to really have an impact if they qualify for the finals.
“I think we are good enough to go all the way this year. We have a very good spread of different players, the new players have settled in, the numbers on the track have been good and there is a lot of positivity around the club at the moment,” he said.
Cooper says he models his game on Lewis Jetta and Adam Goodes.
“I just like these two guys and I particularly watch Lewis closely and where he runs. I think I play a bit like him as I am a midfielder.
