Trentham v Maryborough Rovers – ANZAC Day Night Game
Round two of the 2014 Bendigo Bank MCDFNL this weekend will see Trentham host Maryborough Rovers on Anzac Day under the new lighting that was installed at Trentham Oval over the Summer break.
The game is the first game to ever be played on Anzac day in the MCDFNL and a big crowd is expected at Trentham Oval, with the game starting at 7:30pm on Friday night.
Trentham have played practice matches under the lighting and they have been given the tick of approval from all concerned.
Trentham have been in a rebuilding phase under the watchful eye of Coach Clayton Scoble and the development of the youth at Trentham plus the inclusion of some good recruits has boosted the confidence of everyone at the Saints. It was a promising performance against Dunolly last round which came down to the dying stages of the game in which an exciting draw was the final result.
Rovers have also recruited well this season and the return of Grant Ryan from injury has been a bonus for the Magpies who were well in the game until half time last week but could not maintain the pressure on Royal Park as they fell away in the second half.
The home ground advantage will be a big help for the Saints and they should be able to win a close one.

Newstead v Avoca
Newstead will host Avoca at Camp Reserve in Castlemaine for this game as the Steaders ground is unavailable due to construction works taking place.
Newstead are on a high at the moment as they had a very convincing win against quality opposition in the Carisbrook Redbacks in the opening round of the season, while, after losing a number of players over the summer, the Bulldogs put up a better performance than some expected until the Swans got the better of them after the half time break.
The Bulldogs have lost their entire midfield from last season which was one of their strengths, but they have recruited a number of players from Ballarat early in the season and it will be interesting to see how they fare against the likes of Nathan Webster, Daniel Christmas and Mark Ramsey who is very dangerous down back or up forward, as was shown last week when he kick four goals against good opposition.
Newstead’s depth should hold them in good stead to get the points in this game.

Campbells Creek v Talbot
Talbot travel to Campbells Creek in what is most likely to be billed as the game of the round as both teams are coming off big wins in the opening games of the season.
The Hawks are sitting on top of the ladder after destroying Maldon by more than twenty goals as they dominated the game from start to finish.
The Hawks were well led by their leaders as Ricky Andrews and Matt Smith were outstanding down back and a two pronged attack of Josh Sullivan and Josh Parsons proved difficult to curtail as they slotted 16 goals between them.
Campbells Creek blew Harcourt away with an eleven goal second quarter last week with Shannon Berriman and Josh Hutchinson using their experience and strength around the packs to set up many forward moves to where the high flying Joel Smith finished off the good work with five goals. The Creekers have lost full forward Chris Stone, who has returned to Harcourt, but they have recruited a group of players from Ballarat who have also fitted into the surrounds very well at the Creekerdome and will be looking forward to this week’s contest.
In a game that could go either way, the Hawks consistency over four quarters in their previous game may just give them the nod in what should be a close game.

Natte Bealiba v Carisbrook
Natte Bealiba will confront a wounded Carisbrook in round two of the MCDFNL at Maryborough’s Princes Park, with the Swans looking to twist the knife deeper against the Redbacks who are coming off a rare round one loss.
After their shock loss against Newstead in round one, Carisbrook will be on the rebound against the Swans, who were ultra-impressive in their opening round defeat of arch-rivals Avoca on the neutral turf of Maryborough’s Princes Park, due to renovations at the Swans’ home ground. The change in ground shouldn’t favour either side however, with both the Brook and Natte boasting plenty of running power to take advantage of the wider wings and open expanses.
Despite some much-discussed recruits during the off-season, it was again familiar names who came to the fore for the Redbacks in round one, with Nick Wright, Nick Robinson and young gun Jakob Tidyman named among the best, and coach Luke Treacy will ask for more from some of his new faces, including Cole Roscholler and Brandon McRedmond, who looks set to line up for his new side despite suffering a concussion in the loss to the Roos.
Second-year Swans coach Shane Green looks set to take an unchanged line-up into Saturday’s clash after a pleasing round one performance against Avoca. With star centre half-forward Mark Fitzgerald missing due to a knee injury, the unpredictability of Natte’s forward line could work in its favour after small forwards Ryan Weir and Trent Mortlock slotted a bag of goals apiece in the win over the Bulldogs.
This clash shapes as a vital one for both sides, with Carisbrook desperate to avoid a 0-2 start to its season, while the Swans will be out to make a statement against one of the MCDFNL’s powerhouse sides.

Royal Park v Maldon
Royal Park will set out to make one of its best starts to an MCDFNL season in recent years as the Tigers chase their second win in round two against an underperforming Maldon.
After taking a number of positive steps both on and off the field in 2013, the Tigers look to have taken things up a notch further in 2014, destroying arch-rivals Maryborough Rovers in the round one Maryborough Derby. Tigers coach Greg Stewart will now be keen to see his side take momentum from that win and build on it against the Lions this weekend. Matthew Walker will play a key role for the Tigers down back, likely to clamp down on one of Maldon’s key playmakers, while up forward, it’s a new look Tigers attack thanks to the focal point provided by new recruit, Taylor Stewart.
Maldon looked a far cry from its form of recent years in a round one thumping at the hands of Talbot, and could be in for more pain this week against the buoyant Tigers. A slew of departures over the off-season looks to have hurt the Dons, leaving all the work to too few. Plenty of quality still remains in the forms of Joel Cross and Hayden Kelly, but they need some teammates around them to stand up and be counted.
Stewart will have the Tigers focused on making it a perfect start to the MCDFNL season, and they could well do so, up against a Maldon side in desperate need of a rebound win.

Harcourt v Navarre
Navarre will continue its premiership defence this weekend as it confronts a Harcourt side which appears to be struggling against both injury and form.
The Lions copped a belting at the hands of Campbells Creek and the Harcourt side’s pride will be severely dented. Co-coaches Daniel Smith and Scott Whitehead would have been disappointed with his side’s showing against the Creekers in round one, and will be desperate to see the Lions bounce back, but it will be a tough task against Navarre, who accounted for Lexton with ease in round one.
Navarre didn’t look to have lost of its class in the opening round, with coach Daniel Parkin and the Driscoll brothers, Ash and Josh, all showing that they’d had a big pre-season. Parkin will be keen to see that form roll on this weekend, and will also be seeking big games from recruits Sam Kaye and Jesse Hannett this weekend.

Lexton v Dunolly (Sunday)
Dunolly showed an improvement on last season when they held Trentham to a draw at Deledio Reserve last week, while Lexton went down to Navarre, but showed that they are a team to watch again this season.
With the inclusion of a number of new faces, The Tigers showed glimpses of what could be as they gel together as the season progresses; Nick Spolding was outstanding and the dangerous Matt Brown was brilliant early in the game with a four goal opening term, and if Dunolly are to have any chance at all of causing an upset in this game, then they will have to stop the supply to the dangerous forward.
The Eagles will find this game a lot tougher than when they faced the Saints last week, and Coach Tony Bellenger will have to be on song in the middle if his team are to curtail the likes of Jimmy Templeton and Damon Aspland, who both love to run on the wide open spaces at Lexton.
While early season form is hard to judge, The Tigers should win this game quite comfortably.
