In the ANZAC Day weekend’s round of football, brought a couple of surprise results. Donald who recorded their first win for a season in last week’s round of matches continued their winning form when they got their second win for the year this time against Charlton who led the contest all day apart from the last half of the final term where the conceded the lead to the Royal Blues who kicked five last quarter goals to claim an eleven point victory.
Sundays round of matches seen St Arnaud caused the upset result of the round, not the fact that they defeated Birchip-Watchem being the surprise, but the margin of eighty four points and ease that they accounted for the previously undefeated Bulls combination. At Wedderburn a young spirited Boort side kept pace for a fair part of the journey with the Redbacks in most departments apart from the score board. Wedderburn with more options up forward were never in danger of defeat and with a comfortable margin of eighty five points gave an indication that they will still produce a fairly solid combination in the coming weeks.
Donald v Charlton
In the only match on ANZAC Day the Navy Blues got out to a good start holding the Royal Blues scoreless in the first term and held a seventeen point lead at the end of the first quarter. Charlton should have been in a stronger position at the first break having seven scoring shots with on two shots being rewarded with full points.
The second quarter was fairly even with Donald getting back into the game with three goals but still trailed by twenty points at the main break.
Charlton who had the use of the breeze in the third quarter could not take the wind advantage and could only register the one goal while the Donald side added two and at three quarter time had reduced the margin to fourteen points.
Donald set straight about their task in reducing that three quarter deficit and within a short time had levelled up to the Navy Blues score. Charlton struck back with their second goal for the half to again draw level with Donald but Donald restarted their motor and finished the game off better than the Navy Blues to claim an eleven point win two record their second win for the year.
Final scores Donald 10-3=63 defeated Charlton 7-10 =52
St Arnaud v Birchip-Watchem
This game got off to an even start with both sides posting three goals and three points a peace and that would be a close as the Bulls would get to the Saints. This was going to be a test for both sides with the Bulls going into the game being undefeated and the Saints coming off a heavy loss to the Navy Blues in the previous round. In the second quarter the Saints started to stamp their authority on the game as they kicked out to a handy 26-point lead with the Coghlan brother in Nick and Nathan getting more than their share of the Sherrin and they were getting good support from Tipungwuti who managed three first half goals. Gilmore and Castellano were on target for the Bulls but it wasn’t enough to stop the Saints who were making the most of their opportunities.
Birchip-Watchem sparked a mini revival in the early part of the third term and they were just getting back into the game when the Saints regrouped to finish the quarter off better than the Bulls to extend their lead out to 31-points at the final change with Needs and Nick Coghlan leading be example and posting important goals for the Saints.
In the final quarter the Bulls could only post the one goal while the Saints went on a goal kicking spree adding nine goals with many players getting on the goal kicking list. This for the Saints was an important win after suffering a loss to the Navy Blues and to do it such fine style was important for the Saints and a win of over eighty points puts the Saints season back on track. For the Bulls this loss was a real reality check after recording wins in their opening two games and they will have to reset their goals rather quickly as they front up to the undefeated Donald in next week’s round.

Wedderburn v Boort
Wedderburn went into this game minor a few experienced players and would be looking for a good result in their Sunday game against Boort. Boort who is fielding their youngest team ever, were not going to give the reigning premiers any favours as they showed plenty of spirit in the early quarters but as the game went on they lost touch with the Redbacks.
Wedderburn held a 23-point lead at the first break with Boort kicking one of their two goals for the game late in this quarter. Rosa was providing the Redbacks with a target up forward and Ben DeAraugo was getting plenty of the ball and sending it forward on many occasions in the quarter. Boort were being well lead by Sam Taylor and Aaron Wilson and at time they chimed in with members of the young Boort side but while they were competitive their major issue was getting the ball into their forward line.
In the second quarter Wedderburn extended their lead but once again they were off target adding 2-7 and held a 42-point lead at half time.
Boort were again able to restrict the Redbacks scoring holding them to just two goals for the term but again they should have been further ahead but their accuracy again let them down.
The Final quarter looked like both side would just go through the motions, Boort got their second goal when Coach Taylor took a strong mark and brought up full points. At the other end Wedderburn’s Luke Rosa and Ben DeAraugo added two goals each to give their side a handy win with the margin being 85-points. Boort’s young brigade can feel proud of the efforts as most would have expected a bigger winning margin to the Redbacks but their efforts restricted the home side to a respectable score. Wedderburn will take the win and reset their goals for their next match at St Arnaud in two weeks’ time.
Final scores Wedderburn 13-20=98 def Boort 2-1=13.
