MILLICENT LEADS SOUTH EAST COAST BASKETBALL

Millicent Men and Millicent Saints Women lead the SE Coast Basketball League competitions coming into the holiday break.

The Millicent Men grabbed top spot on the Premiership Table after an impressive 20 point win against Bulldogs last Wednesday night. Bulldogs however had Lachlan Hunter and Josh Jenner missing from their line-up.

Both sides traded basket for basket in the first half. Millicent led 19-17 and despite a telling impact by Bulldogs’ Simon Berkefeld, Millicent managed to maintain a lead of 37-34 at the main break.

Much of the same followed in the early minutes of the second half until an indiscretion by Bulldogs’ Matt Jennings appeared to give Millicent the impetus to go on an 11-1 run. The perimeter accuracy of Jed Telfer and Aiden Schultz along with the clever inside team work of Nick Morrison and Josh Murphy enabled Millicent to set up their biggest lead of the match, 64-51 at three quarter time.

A 26-19 final quarter secured a 20 point win, 90-70, for Millicent. In summary the win by Millicent was not unexpected but the margin of 20 points was when one considers the closeness of the contest in the first half.

The winners saw Murphy and Morrison score 20 and 17 while Telfer and Schultz bagged 19 and 18 from beyond the arc.

Simon Berkefeld led the scoring for Bulldogs with 25, followed by brother Matt on 17 and hard worker, Dylan Bromley on 10.

The game between Cougars and Panthers Men was “up for grabs” in the first three quarters. Panthers managed to lead by 2 or 3 points at each of the first three breaks only to see Kane deWit grab the game by the scruff of the neck and compile a match winning 9 point final quarter. He had strong support from quiet achiever Sam Stafford in this critical period.

On the other hand Panthers’ scoring avenues dried up. Laurie Bradley-Brown scored a regulation basket with 4.30 minutes on the clock. From here on Panthers did not trouble the scorers until Mitchell Mott made 2 with 2 seconds to play. In contrast Cougars increased their score from 65 to 78 during this time  to consolidate their claim on fourth position.

Leading scorers were deWit with 32, Stafford 22 and Panthers’ Dellon Brown on 23.

While the SECBL Women did not play this last week, Millicent Saints are the early favourites to win the summer premiership. They have dominated the competition so far this season.

The SECBL competitions resume on Wednesday January 27th 2016.The Men’s program sees Roos meet Cougars, Millicent host Wizards and Panthers take on Bulldogs. Saints Women play Roos in a rematch of the winter grand final, Cougars meet Panthers and Bulldogs play Cats all at the Ice House.

Meanwhile the Senior Lakers’ teams will be heading into the final weeks of the Victorian Country Basketball Season in the remaining weeks of December and through January.
