Chairpersons Report 2012

CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT 2012 - Wednesday, December 05, 2012

This year was the tenth year Hoops 4 Health has been in operation.

I would like to begin by saying ten years without an administrative base and without core funding is a great achievement. I was present at the launch in Cairns in February 2002 and have seen the organisation grow for a program to a health promotion charity. We still have a long way to go.

2012 began with us delivering the 4th Hoops 4 Health Challenge in Alice Springs made possible through funding from the NT Department of Sport and Recreation.

We continued our annual clinic at Nemarluk School in March and would like to continue this at their new facility in Alawa.

We had anticipated sending two teams to the USA in December 2012 but because of cost issues were unable to proceed. This tour would have seen us participate in a basketball tournament at a Native American Indian reservation in Arizona.

In June we celebrated our ten year anniversary which was a success. The event known as the Above The Rim Ball, was a chance to launch Hoopla our female mascot.

In July we received funding through the Aboriginal Benefits Account. Although the funding was considerably less than what we applied for we were able to use this to conduct more programs in and around Alice Springs in October.

Our Live Longer Program continues and we held a “Moonlight Challenge” event in September at Lake Leanyer. We are still committed to doing one more in 2013 in conjunction with Danila Dilba at Palmerston and Minmarama. The funding for this program (through the Department of Health and Ageing) concludes in June 2013.

In October we received an award from NAPCAN for the “Play Your Part” Award in preventing child abuse and safety through our BALLER Program.

I would like to thank the Board and volunteers for their time and let’s now make a real effort to giving Hoops 4 Health Aboriginal Corporation a real home in 2013.

Glenn Warrior, Chairperson, Hoops 4 Health Aboriginal Corporation
