Sunday the 12th of May will go down as one of those days where the riding gods smiled on the Pre85MXWA Club for the grand opening of the Hillman Park motocross track at Darkan. Perfect weather and perfect track conditions.
The day started with a great Mother’s Day breakfast, as we know ‘happy wife, happy life’. After a brief riders meeting it was time for the club to thank those who have gone above and beyond to ensure the club’s future. Track Curator Paul Bailey was recognised for his selfless contribution of earthmoving equipment and time with a sweeper being named in his honour and Club President Paul Copley was recognised for his unwavering dedication to the club with the start finish straight being named in his honour. In order to celebrate such an auspicious occasion Jimmy Ellis did the honours cutting the Yamaha bunting at the official opening ceremony and the day was underway.
Riding time. Mick Baird’s (CR500) name was drawn from the riders present to ride the ceremonial first lap with Jimmy Ellis (YZ465). The rest of the field were ‘champing at the bit’ to get onto the track and great restraint was shown by all as Jimmy and Mick made their way around. With the completion of the ceremonial lap all riders took to the track under yellow flag conditions in order to take in what a great track it is. Heavy rain during the week meant the water cart could take the day off and riders could concentrate on trying to carve the best lines around what is turning out to be one of the most enjoyable tracks in WA. With the completion of the sighting lap riders got into the groove with a number not wanting to come in. This in itself is the biggest compliment to all those involved in building the Hillman Park facility.
The Pre85MXWA club is about the bikes so the day was split into the following classes to ensure there was something for everyone:
- Pre90/Pre85 A Grade
- Juniors
- Pre 75 All Powers
- Twin Shock & 4 Stroke All Powers
- Pre90/Pre85 B Grade
The highlight for many was seeing the incorporation of Juniors into the programme, keeping in line with the club’s ethos of being family friendly and affordable. In the classes there were some awesome bikes and riding skills on display from all eras which really made the day great to watch, it certainly wasn’t a procession of vintage bikes!
A massive thanks to all the volunteers and flaggies who made the weekend the success it was. All in all an awesome weekend of classic motocross, great bikes, great riding and great attitudes.
Thanks to Tina for the Great photos, these are now available under the Photo Tab.
Great Feedback from the Weekend:-
On behalf of myself and my son Sam I would like to congratulate and thank you for a tremendous event on the weekend. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy not only the track and the facilities but seeing my son over the moon with happiness of being involved in the days activities topped it off. He made the comment several times how good it was being involved, and how all the kids were friendly and made him feel welcome. He has not been before actively involved in sport and it was only recently he got the riding bug which with myself riding as well my three brothers, and the influence of his grandfather who is 85 and still riding we are extremely happy for him.
Again well done guys and I look forward to the next one.
All the best, Scott
