Lady Reds v Sydney FC Preview

The Lady Reds will look to get themselves back on this winners list this Friday night as they host Sydney FC in round 10 of the Westfield W-League.

After a disappointing 3-0 loss at the hands of Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, the Lady Reds will be looking to regain some top form as the regular season nears completion.

Midfield maestro Lisa-Marie Woods was disappointed with the loss to the Roar and believed it's a harsh reminder of what is needed in such a competitive league.

“Brisbane played very good and unfortunately we didn’t perform as well as we know that we can and we know that in this league we need to perform 100% to our standard if we are to get the 3 points.”

However Woods remained positive that the Lady Reds can regain their winning form and that at their best, they are hard to beat.

“Our potential is there but we need to be on our game and I’m confident we can, we just need to make sure we do that.”

There is no chance of the Lady Reds underestimating their upcoming opponent either and Woods recognised the challenges that Sydney FC bring.

“We know that they’re a solid team, like every team in this league, they have strong line up front and some quality across the park so to win games like these, we need to find a way to play our own game as well as try to make it hard for them.”

Lady Reds Coach Ross Aloisi told that the message after the defeat to the Roar was about learning from the loss.

“I spoke to the girls briefly about being focused because when they’re not it’s very hard to get a result. We know they give all they have got and there’s no complaints there.”

The key to dismantling Sydney will be significantly easier with the return of 5 first team players. Monique Iannella, Emily Condon, Alex Chidiac, Isabel Hodgson and Dylan Holmes were all absent for the Round 9 match due to their involvement in the Westfield Young Matildas campaign in Vietnam.

“It’s fantastic to have 5 girls in the national Under 19 squad at one time. It is an amazing achievement for the girls and for the FFSA and having them back will change the dynamics of our team with a lot more pace coming back into the squad.”

With these more than handy inclusions set to return, the focus will be stopping a Sydney outfit that at their best can control the field.

“Our focus will be on countering Sydney’s weaknesses and making sure that we don’t allow them to play their free flowing football that they can and make sure that we can take out chances.”
