Lady Reds v Newcastle Jets Match Preview

The Adelaide United Lady Reds will have a chance to make amends for last week’s loss to ladder leaders Melbourne City, as they take on the Newcastle Jets at Coopers Stadium this Sunday in Round 6 of the Westfield W-League.

The Lady Reds fell 2-0 to City, but retained second spot on the ladder.

Defender Alex Gummer and the rest of the team were left “disappointed” with the result.

“We had a game plan going into it (the match) and I just don’t think that we performed to the best that we can,” Gummer said.

“So we are all disappointed in that respect.”

However, Gummer is overall happy with the start to the season.

“I think we’ve had a great start to the season,” Gummer said,” we started building up really well with the past two games - well, previously before the Melbourne City game – with regards to the (Melbourne) Victory and Brisbane Roar win.”

“So, it was good to get some wins on the board and it’s brought our confidence up higher, so we just got to keep going forward and play to the best that we can.”

Gummer sees the upcoming match against the Jets as vital, given the short length of the season and the two points that separate the teams.

“It’s hugely important,” Gummer said, “I think we’re close on points to them.”

“Because it’s a short season, every point is vital.

“And these sorts of games are six point games because obviously we stop them from getting the three points, if we play to the best of our abilities and get more points for us to give us a chance to make the finals.”

The Newcastle Jets are coming off the back of a 0-0 draw against Canberra United, which midfielder Gema Simon is all in all fine with.

“It was good game, it was a pretty tough game,” Simon said.

“I think we created a lot of opportunities in front of goal and we weren’t clinical when we needed to be, but there were a lot of positives that we could take out of the game.”

Like Gummer, Simon sees this Sunday’s match as one of the most important matches so far this season.

“Like this week is one of the most important games of this season so far with how close the table is,” she said.
“So I guess if we get the three points this weekend, it will put us in a good position.

“But everyone is pretty close at the moment, so any points you can get are pretty important.”
