NEW WEEKLY COLUMN: GRFC LEAGUE PREVIEW

MENS Division One league leaders Barwon SC will be looking to break away from a tight pack, when the Reds travel to Ocean Grove on Friday night to open proceedings in an intriguing Round 11 encounter of the GRFC competition.

The clash between Barwon Red and Surfside Waves at Shell Reserve on Friday night will be a hotly contested affair, as just three points separate top team Barwon from the 5th placed Waves. Kick-off is at 6:30pm.

Barwon, which leads the competition with 18 points, is just two points clear of a cluster of teams all on 16 points.

On Sunday, second placed Deakin Ducks will host bottom side Corio SC at the Deakin University Top Field (1:00pm) with nothing less than a win an acceptable outcome for the Students, as 3rd placed Rangers will host 4th placed Drysdale SC at 3:00pm Myers Reserve in Bell Post Hill.

Deakin, Rangers and Drysdale are all currently on 16 points apiece, with just goal difference separating all three sides.

DIVISION TWO:

The highly anticipated ‘Lara Derby’ between hosts Lara SC and the visiting Elcho Park Cardinals will be the pick of the action in Round 11 of the Division Two competition this weekend.

The 5th placed hosts will be aiming to open up a five point gap against its near neighbours, while the Cardinals could overtake the Cats and jump into 5th spot with a victory at Lara Recreation Reserve on Sunday. Kick-off is at 1:00pm.

In other games, leaders Surf Coast FC host Bell Park at Banyul Warri on Friday night (7:30pm), while in the Sunday games, Barwon is at home to 4th placed Deakin Ducks at Grovedale Reserve (3:00pm), 9th placed Drysdale hosts second placed Barwon Heads at Howard Glover Reserve (3:00pm) and cellar dwellers Breakwater Eagles will be faced with a tough task, when they host 3rd placed Bellarine Sharks at the White Eagle Club (3:00pm).

DIVISION THREE:

League leader, Geelong SC, hosts 3rd placed Deakin Ducks Green in the pick of the action in Mens Division Three action this coming weekend.

The Lions, who lead the competition by two points from Corio Bay Blue, will be hoping the second placed outfit drops points when they travel to Grovedale Reserve to take on 5th placed Barwon SC White. Kick-off for both games is set down for 3:00pm.

WOMEN’S DIVISION:

Top placed Kardinia International College is faced with a relatively easy assignment on Saturday, when it travels to the White Eagle Club to take on 6th placed Breakwater Eagles in Round 11 of the Womens competition.

The Students have opened up a handy four point buffer at the top, but they are well aware a stumble in Saturday’s game could see things tighten up considerably at the top. The action gets underway at 3:00pm.

Second placed Barwon SC, meanwhile, will be waiting in the wings for the Eagles to cause an unlikely upset, with the southern suburbs based outfit hosting bottom side Corio Bay at Grovedale Reserve at 1:00pm.

In other games, Surf Coast is at home to Deakin Ducks at Banyul Warri Reserve (1:00pm), while Geelong SC hosts Surfside Waves in the earlier match of the double header at Stead Park (1:00pm), with Geelong SC Red taking on Barwon Heads at 3:00pm.
