GRFC (WOMEN’S DIVISION) ROUND 16 REVIEW

KARDINIA International College will need to secure a solitary point from its last two matches in order to secure the GRFC Women’s Division minor premiership, after it comfortably disposed of Corio Bay SC 9-1 in Round 16 action last Saturday.

Prolific scorer Sofia Harrop was the star of the show for Kardinia with a hat-trick, while Ella Polglaze netted a brace and Stephanie Cameron, Aysun Kivilcin and Annie Liddy-Corlet each scored a goal apiece in the win against the bottom placed Corio Bay.

Harrop has scored an amazing 19 goals so far this season and is second on the goalscorers’ chart behind Deakin’s Madeleine Lee Gow.

After an administrative error was rectified over the weekend, it was discovered that Lee Gow was in actual fact the Women’s Division’s runaway leading goalscorer. That fact can certainly not be disputed after the Deakin sharpshooter’s effort against Barwon Heads last Saturday.

Lee Gow recorded an amazing six goal haul to lead her Ducks to a 9-0 rout over the hapless Barwon Heads SC at Village Park. The other scorers for Deakin included Jessica Lock, Christie Merry and an own goal.

Saturday’s spectacular double hat-trick takes Lee Gow’s season tally to 32 goals!

Geelong SC took full advantage of Millie Livesey’s absence to steal a point against sister team, Geelong SC Red, in an eventful 2-2 draw at Stead Park.

Livesey, who has scored 18 goals for the Reds and was sitting second on the League Goalscorers’ chart before the weekend’s round, was sorely missed by the 5th placed Reds.

A win against the 9th placed Geelong SC would’ve thrust the Reds to just two points off a Finals’ spot. But it wasn’t to be as Sofie Desborough netted a double for Geelong SC, while Kylie Brauwers and Stephanie Costa scored one apiece for the Reds.

In the two other games, Breakwater Eagles held 4th placed Surfside Waves to a 1-1 draw, while lowly Surf Coast FC managed to do the same, drawing 0-0 with 3rd placed Barwon SC.
