REPORT: GRFC Women’s Division One – Round 5 review

KICKING off Round 5 of the GRFC Women’s Division 1 last Friday night, Surfside Waves hosted Barwon in what ended up a 1-1 stalemate between the two teams in 2nd and 4th place respectively. Alexis Pearson was the goalscorer for Surfside again, continuing her amazing early season form, while Laura Fitzpatrick scored for Barwon to end the game in a tie.

At Howard Glover Reserve on Saturday, Drysdale was defeated 6-1 by the visiting Deakin Ducks. The two teams played a rough game that was very challenging. The Ducks went into the half time break up 2-1. After the break Deakin smashed out a further four goals, one of which was an own goal.

The goalscorers for Deakin included Andrea Thornton, Brittany Patafio, Mollie Cooper, Hannah Gordon and Madeleine Lee Gow, while for Drysdale Serena Clapp was the lone goalscorer.

The final game of the weekend saw Kardinia International College take on bottom side Geelong SC. Kardinia started off the game by scoring a goal within the first five minutes and went on to show total dominance for the remainder of the match.

Goalscorers for Kardinia on the day included Caelli Wood, who scored a hat-trick, Daisy Sanders and Sofia Harrop with singles apiece, while Bella Murphy-Bowen scored in both nets in the same half within two minutes!

The pick of this weekend’s Round 5 action is the Barwon v Drysdale clash at Grovedale Reserve on Saturday at 3pm. Drysdale sits 3rd on the ladder while Barwon trails in 4th spot by one solitary point. This clash will determine whether Drysdale can hold onto their third spot on the ladder or be overtaken by Barwon.

The other game being played on Friday night will be the Surfside Waves v Kardinia International College clash at Shell Road Reserve. Kick-off is set down for 7.30pm.

The final match of the round will be staged on Saturday when Geelong SC hosts the high flying Deakin Ducks at Stead Park, commencing at 3pm.
