BASL - Introducing MiniRoos

Changes to Small-Sided Football - Introducing MiniRoos

In February 2014, Football Federation Australia (FFA) rebranded its football program for junior players from Small-Sided Football, to the MiniRoos.

MiniRoos is a smaller version of football that provides boys and girls aged 4-11 years old with a fun introduction to the world game. MiniRoos gives them a fun environment, where they are able to learn new skills and to make new friends.

With smaller pitches, smaller teams and no goalkeepers in the younger age groups, players are able to become more involved in the matches with more touches of the ball. As the players get older, the MiniRoos rules are adapted to help them prepare for full sized matches by slowly increasing the pitch size, the number of players and the introduction of goalkeepers.

The progression teaches the players the benefits of having more space, the discovery of the different sizes of the field as well as teaching children to use different and well- developed techniques to play a more tactical game and assisting them in understanding the role of different positions.

“The MiniRoos program is excellent, because it is a very accessible way for young boys and girls to participate in the world game”, says Bendigo Amateur Soccer League (BASL) Operations Manager Brock Rogers.

“It allows young players from all over Central Victoria to become involved in one of Bendigo’s local clubs and participate in a structured competition, playing against other local clubs whilst getting a taste of what football is all about in an active, enjoyable environment.”

There are many clubs around Bendigo that are involved in the MiniRoos program.  To be eligible to register as a MiniRoo, boys and girls need to be turning 5 at anytime during the calendar year.

To get involved in MiniRoos, get in touch with one of the numerous local clubs who will be able to get you started as a MiniRoo. For more information visit www.miniroos.com.au, www.basl.com.au or contact BASL Operations Manager Brock Rogers on 5442 7592 or 0418 982 851.
