BASL Mid Season Review

The next few weeks will mark the midway point of the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League’s Senior Division’s Championships.

With six rounds down, a clearer picture is beginning to appear as to who will be challenging for silverware come the end of the season.

In the Division One, Strathdale have had a fantastic first half to the season, starting strong with big wins over Epsom and Golden City and haven’t slowed down since. Still yet to taste defeat, Strathdale have taken all of the available points on offer so far this season playing some excellent football.

Sean Boxshall has been immense leading the frontline for them, topping the competitions goal scoring charts so far. With the like of Jon Bryers and Julian Taylor also contributing to the goals, Strathdale have scored a total of 19 goals.

Strathdale’s only real challengers this year, who are only four points behind, are Spring Gully. Gully also remain undefeated, although have had two draw against Eaglehawk and Colts United both in the first two rounds. Spring Gully and Strathdale will go up against each other next weekend in what will be an enthralling contest, that will go a long way to determining the title come the end of the year.

Tied on seven points, Colts United and Eaglehawk sit on third and fourth place respectively. Both clubs started the season extremely slowly, having to wait until a few rounds in for them to collect their first points, leaving a large gap between them and those above them. Even though Colts have a dependable goal scorer in Dylan Callaway, the young squad haven’t been able to generate consistent enough results to challenge the likes of Strathdale and Spring Gully for end of season honours.  Eaglehawk have also had a mixed bag of results, and will be challenging Colts in the battle for third place at the end of the season.

With only a solitary win to their name, Epsom currently sit in fifth position on three points. Their only win came back in the first round with a 3-2 win over Colts United with goals to Brett Quin, Paul McClounan and Trevor Harvey. Epsom will come up against Eaglehawk next week at home which gives them the opportunity to close the gap between themselves and the teams above them, and would be a great kick start to the second half of their campaign.

Sitting last is Golden City. After their Knockout Cup success earlier this year, hopes were high that they would have been able to continue their run into the Championship season. But after losing key players, City has lost the momentum they had gained preseason and sit pointless at the foot of the table. They went close to picking up their first points last week after taking the lead against Spring Gully, but goals to Joel Bish and Josh Baum meant that Spring Gully ended up victorious 2-1.
