BASL Round Preview - Epsom Underlights

Epsom Soccer Club will open this weekend’s action on Saturday night, when they will host third place Colts United. The match will mark the opening of the new lights on their main ground, as the two go head to head. Colts sit equal third with Eaglehawk, but are well off the pace of the top two, with their defeat to second place Spring Gully last week only extending the gap.

Epsom are coming off a convincing win against Golden City last week, with goals from Adrian Stockwell, Brett Quin, Adam Crawley, Jeremy Hassle and Hamish Gladstone contributing to a 5-1 score line. But they are still having trouble stringing results together and the clash under lights this week will be a tough challenge for the Scorpions.

In other matches, league leaders Strathdale will take on Golden City on Sunday as they look to continue their dominance of the league. Strathdale keep grinding out results and are now at the point of the season where the title is theirs to lose. They come off a close 1-0 win over Eaglehawk last week with a Sean Boxshall goal separating the two teams.

Golden City have started to record results and pick up some wins in recent times, with the Rams having won two of their last three matches with 3-2 and 3-1 wins against Epsom and Colts United. Strathdale will be a big test for the squad, with their last meeting back in the first round ending up in a 4-0 victory to Strathdale.

Spring Gully is hosting the last match of the round, as Eaglehawk make the trip to Stanley Avenue. Spring Gully will be aiming to keep Strathdale looking over their shoulders as they will be looking to keep challenging for the title for as long as they can. They had a good day out last week, with a 3-1 win over third place Colts United with a late Ben Lowndes goal sealing the points for the Reds.

Eaglehawk will be encouraged after their performance last week after nearly taking points off Strathdale, with the Borough going down to just a single Sean Boxshall goal. The battle for third place with Colts United is looking to go down to the wire, but Eaglehawks extra game in hand may well end up proving the difference at the end of the season. The two clubs will be fighting it at on Sunday for the Toots Trewella Shield.

In the Women’s Division, first place Colts United will take on third place Epsom on Saturday afternoon. Colts suffered their first defeat of the season last week, when they went down to Spring Gully 2-1. United will be out to ensure it is only a blip in an otherwise dominate season and will be out for the three points.

Epsom are coming off a win against Golden City and will be looking to continue their momentum as they aim to consolidate their position in the top half of the table.

Golden City will host Strathdale on Sunday. With both teams locked on nine points, it is an opportunity for either squad to break away from the other as they battle it out for fourth place.

Both teams come off a loss with Golden City and Strathdale going down 1-0 and 3-1 to Epsom and Eaglehawk respectively.

The last Women’s match for the weekend has Spring Gully taking on Eaglehawk. Spring Gully will be encouraged after they were the first team to defeat runaway leaders Colts United all season. Goals to Jade De Marchi and Ally Van Dalen were enough to get them over the line in a 2-1 victory.

Eaglehawk will also be in a positive state of mind after they recorded their first win of the season after a win over Strathdale last week. Carly Geary, Sally Norman and Chloe Parker were on target in a 3-1 win.
