Gippsland Girls attend Female Youth Leadership Camp

Three Gippsland girls were given the opportunity to attend Female Youth Leadership Camp at Kinglake Ranges Wilderness Camp as an amazing and eye opening experience.

Organised by Game Changers Australia in partnership with YMCA and Sport and Recreation Victoria, the three football players, Te-Arni Perkins (Newborough-Yallourn United SC) , Mckenzie Wilson (Warragul United SC) and Kelsey Tong (Wonthaggi United SC) were among females aged 15-19 and representing seven different sports who attended the camp from 28th 29th & 30th September.

The program provided the opportunity to meet current female leaders, athletes and a chance to network with hopeful leaders of the future.  The camp pushed the participants out of their comfort zone with team building, public speaking, and competitive physical activities. A range of female sports attend this camp such as basketball, football, golf, yachting, cricket, lawn balls, swimming, netball, diving, figure skating, cross country, life savers, athletics and soccer.  Each sport provided a Female representative, Ash Callaghan, FFV’s Women’s Development Officer represented soccer.

Participants received professional development training, goal setting and personal branding advice. Soccer participants also extended their time at the camp and completed their Grassroots Training accreditation.

On the completion of the program all participants will complete 25+ hours of volunteer service within their sports club/community to put their new found leadership skills into action.  A graduation Ceremony will be held in April 2015 upon the completion of their volunteer hours.

“The camp gave me the opportunity to push me outside my comfort zone, to network with other girls of different sporting backgrounds, and enabled me to see different pathways within sport to continue with my passion.” McKenzie from Warragul United SC said.

“I really enjoyed meeting the leaders who have carved a path within sport after retiring from their highly competitive respective levels.”
