Gippsland Girls attend FIFA “Live Your Goals” Event

On Sunday, two Gippsland girls, McKenzie Wilson from Warragul United Soccer Club and Kelsey Tong from Wonthaggi United Soccer Club were fortunate to be invited along as community coaches to coach alongside some of the current Matildas football squad at the FIFA “Live Your Goals” Event.  The “Live Your Goals” concept is being promoted internationally in the lead up to the Womens Football World Cup which will take place in Canada in June 2015.  The Matildas coach Alen Stajcic was also on hand to speak to coaches about the challenges in coaching at an elite level, but also emphasised that at any level of age, the key to keeping players involved was to ensure that the training was fun.  This was certainly the case on Sunday when 120 girls aged 7-13 took part in the Live Your Goals skills and training session.  After the practical component of the day, the young girls were also able to meet the Matildas players and also view the 2015 Womens World Cup Trophy.

Kelsey and McKenzie were provided this exciting opportunity following their involvement in the Game Changers Australia Female Youth Leadership Program in September last year.  This three day camp was aimed at girls aged 16-19 from all sports who are keen to develop their leadership and personal skills.  Since completing the camp Mckenzie and Kelsey have also been undertaking volunteer hours at girls football gala days in order to graduate from the program.  They were delighted then to be nominated as community coaches on Sunday for the Live Your Goals day.  McKenzie and Kelsey are both completing Year 12 this year, but still are very much involved in soccer at their local clubs and are both keen to promote soccer in their region.

The next Female Football event in Gippsland will be the Festival of Football on the weekend of Feb 28th/Mar 1st. This is aimed at female players aged 6-16 and will incorporate skills based training for younger girls as a well as a round robin tournament for the older ones.  To be involved in this event , contact either your local Club or the GSL office.
