ASIAN CUP set to HIT QUEENSLAND

The biggest weekend of international football in Queensland’s history will hit Brisbane in January when three 2014 FIFA World Cup teams and the 2007 AFC Asian Cup winners play over two consecutive nights in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

The two most recent Asian champions, Japan and Iraq, battle it out in a match that may decide Group D on Friday night January 16. The Blue Samurai have won three of the past four Asian Cups, including the most recent edition in 2011, and will go into the 2015 tournament as one of the favourites again.

The Iraqi side they face in Brisbane will be vastly different to the one which famously won the 2007 Asian Cup, with a host of new, young players coming through the ranks. Many of these youngsters were part of the Iraqi side which won the U/22 AFC Asian Cup earlier this year and will have high hopes of progressing deep in the tournament.
