Fury Too Strong For Roar

Northern Fury recorded their first three points in more than a month on Sunday, defeating Brisbane Roar NYL 2-1 at Townsville Sports Reserve.

A Corey Waples penalty in the final ten minutes proved decisive after Kevin Fraser’s first half header followed by a Fury own goal saw the sides even at the break.

Chances were at a premium for both sides before Fraser opened accounts on 27 minutes, heading home from Caleb Hobson’s byline cross.

Roar levelled three minutes prior to the break when under pressure Fury defender Ari Isman steered the ball into his own net from a cross.

The second half saw Fury come out stronger with an increase in pace and possession, but struggled to convert their chances in the final third.

Ultimately, the deciding goal came from the penalty spot after Fraser was felled in the area – Waples deflecting his strike off the woodwork to seal the points.

The result moves Fury to within two points of the tenth place Roar. The Townsville club travels to the south-east to face Moreton Bay United next Saturday night, while Roar host Brisbane City on Friday.
