Pago Pago, American Samoa, Monday, April 12, 2010 — Fa’asao-Marist has failed in its attempt at a varsity double in high school soccer while the Leone Lions are on track for a boys’ double championship.

If the Crusaders had won, they would be in the hunt for a boys’ varsity soccer title in the same school year that their girls took champs for the varsity division.

As it is, the Lions are in the hunt for a double championship in soccer after their junior varsity squad clinched the title on Saturday, April 10, 2010.

Leone, the varisty No. 3 seed, upset No. 2 ranked Fa’asao-Marist 4-2 in the playoff match held at Kananafou on Monday, April 12, 2010.

The Lions will take on top-ranked Tafuna on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at Pago Park Soccer Stadium at 4:00 p.m.

The Lions will be looking to make it a double also in another area: beating the team that defeated them during the regular season. They lost 5-0 to the Crusaders on April 7 and were humiliated by the Warriors 7-1 on March 29.

Good luck to both teams playing for the boys’ varsity 2009-2010 soccer championship.

LIONS 4, CRUSADERS 2

The playoff match was contested evenly right up to the 42nd minute when a penalty kick was awarded to the Lions because of a handball by the Crusaders in the penalty box.

Risati Mapu took a few steps back and then drilled it into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal 12 minutes into the second half.

A minute later Melfi Al-Sheri, in a Maradona-like impression, dribbled the ball from his penalty box for a run of more than 50 yards to score a magnificent goal that ricocheted twice off of Crusaders’ players before entering the net for the score.

Before all this, the Lions scored twice but each goal was answered by Fa’asao-Marist.

Faiai K. lobbed a high shot at goal from midway that the Crusaders’ goalie misjudged by jumping too late to bat away in the 17th minute.

11 minutes later Joseph Mano scored from inside the goalie’s box to equalize the match in the first half.

In the 34th minute, or four minutes into the second half, Larry Joe Utai saw the goalie cheating forward while dribbling in the penalty box and he just lobbed a perfect shot over a leaping goalkeeper to make it 2-1 in favor of Leone.

But back came the Crusaders four minutes later with Rafael Mano scoring on a toe-poke from inside the goalie’s box to tie it up again 2-2, thus setting up the winning goals from the lower-seeded Lions.
