Basketball targets 5000 in 2012

The Fiji Basketball Association plans to increase its members this year. Association president Brigadier-General Ioane Naivalurua said that with the right approach, they hope to help the sport grow in the country. He said the association so far has 2711 members. “We hope to reach 5000 members by next year and with the assistance we have been getting from China and other kind-hearted people, we believe we will be able to reach our target,” Naivalurua said.

He said basketball has made an impact in the lives of many especially in Raiwaqa, a place regarded in Fiji as one of the worst suburbs in the past. “That is why we had the motto ‘More than just Basketball’ because it is not just a sport because it has changed lives, he said. Naivalurua said developing basketball is part of Government’s initiative not only for today but for the future generation.

With the national team gunning towards defending its title in the Pacific Games, Naivalurua said that even the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has his full support for the team. “The PM has sent a directive to the team that they must win and we will be working towards that,” Naivalurua said. Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy this week presented the association with sporting goods in their bid to assist in the development of sports in the country. And they have revealed that they were preparing to offer their assistance in whatever way possible.
