Basketball boost

THE visiting Mont Dore Basketball Club from New Caledonia is providing the national under-19 reps with some quality game time ahead of the 2014 FIBA Oceania U19 Championship.

Basketball Fiji development officer Lai Puamau said the visitors would play some school teams and clubs from Raiwaqa and Suva in their week-long tour. He said the majority of the players from the Fiji U19 team played for their respective secondary school teams and the local clubs.

"So indirectly, they will be helping us prepare for the Oceania Championship which will be played here (Fiji) in December." The Oceania Championship, which will also have big guns New Zealand and Australia, is the qualifying event for the World U19 Championship.

The top side from the regional event will earn a place in the world meet.

Puamau thanked the Fiji National Sports Commission for helping Basketball Fiji in hosting the Mont Dore Club.

Meanwhile, the Mont Dore side lost the opening match of their tour to Yat Sen Secondary 47-49 at Eds Courts in Raiwaqa on Monday.
