Brittany aims for the stars

LANKY Brittany Hazelman is one of four Fijian representatives in the Oceania All-Star basketball team.

She caught the eyes of selectors with her skillful and powerful play at the Oceania Youth tournament in Guam in September.

The Fiji women won bronze there while the men came fifth.

The Shaq Ataq team member is totally at home on the court, so much so, she dreams of ending up in court -- her career goal is to become a lawyer.

She relies on her height, speed and sleight of hand and foot to be a killer.

Over the moon about making it this far, Hazelman couldn't suppress a laugh of joy.

"I am confident I can make a difference in the All-Star team because of my height, which is an advantage for receiving rebounds and doing post-moves on offence," she said.

The 18-year-old reveres NBA giant Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat.

She is the youngest child among five siblings and follows in the footprints of elder sister Dale Wise, a Fiji representative to the SPG.

Her sister, now a soldier, had to leave the national team because of her military commitments.

Hazelman, a sixth former at Yat-Sen, was in the team that toured with the Spain earlier this year.

"It was great because we got to play against world fourth placed Spain and third place Brazil," she said.

That was a great opportunity for her to represent Fiji in a high-level competition.

The four Fiji All-Stars are Meleane Moce, Jese Sikivou and Manoa Puamau, who train twice a week improving their fitness and shooting.

In addition, they do track training for speed.

"It is quite a challenge doing our own training with no coach but we try our best," she said.

Hazelman is grateful to be playing with Moce, who had represented Fiji in the 2006 Oceania All-Star team.

"She was our captain in the Guam Games and is a really good offensive player," she said.

Moce has been described as tough as nails on the court.

She wants to follow the course chartered by Valerie Nainima and aims to snatch a scholarship.

The United States of America is her ultimate dream-come true destination but for the time being has applied to the University of the South Pacific where she could be awarded the all-rounder scholarship for athletes.

Twenty-five players from Oceania region have been chosen from Tahiti, New Caledonia, Guam, Palau and Papua New Guinea for the All -Stars team.

The All-Stars will play in the Australian State championship in Melbourne from February 8-22
