Basketball Fiji meets Education Department

Last Wednesday, the President of Basketball Fiji Mr Iowane Naivalura invited a representative of the Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) to discuss the further development of the sport in the school system. Also attending this meeting was Basketball Fiji Secretary Caroline Whippy and AYAD and FIBA Oceania representative Mark Seccombe.

Basketball Fiji is pleased to announce that we have been given the green light by the Education Department to continue our basketball development throughout the primary schools of Fiji. The Kaji Basketball Program is ensuring that as many students as possible have the opportunity to learn and play basketball in the allocated physical education times set by the schools.

We all acknowledged the importance of study being the number one priority whilst at school but also saw the importance of a rounded education and Basketball Fiji continues to use the sport as a tool for building self esteem, community growth and an avenue to teach healthy lifestyle principles. It is also a fantastic opportunity to enhance the children’s motor skills and co-ordination whilst all along enjoying the lifelong importance of physical activity.

Basketball Fiji thanks the Curriculum Education Department for supporting our new develop plan and we look forward to a strong and committed partnership in the future.

The Primary School Basketball Competition is hoped to be launched by Basketball Fiji on the 6th of March at International School.
