Champion Babas up against Idaman

BASKETBALL development officer Lai Puamau will spearhead Barbarians' defence of the prized late Tu Vili Cinavilakeba Trophy against Idaman in round two of the Raiwaqa Basketball Players Association League tomorrow.

The side recorded an easy win by default in round one last week over knockout champions Bryceland.

Idaman lost by default in round one but the side, led by national rep Koli Matalau, will be out to create history by becoming the fourth club after Boston, Warriors and Barbarians to win the trophy.

Raiwaqa Basketball Players Association official Nicolas Wong said Idaman was impressive in the recent knockout tournament and would provide stiff competition for trophy holders.

Wong said the trophy challenge series started three years ago.

"The trophy is named after one of Raiwaqa's national reps Ratu Vili Cinavilakeba.

He was involved in a lot of development work in Raiwaqa.

"Only three teams have since won the trophy. Boston was the inaugural winner in 2007 and then Warriors and Barbarians won it when it was made part of the league."

He said six teams would represent Raiwaqa in the Christmas Championship in Lautoka on December 12.

Mighty Mights, Veterans, Boston and Bryceland will feature in the men's grade while Golden Bati and X-Wounds will challenge for the women's title.
