Easter meet rated

The Post Fiji Easter Club Basketball Championships went well, although there is always room for improvement, says Laisiasa Puamau. “Our objectives were to do the small things right first before moving to the big things,” Puamau said. “Some of the things achieved were that games were played on time and according to games schedule.”  The Fiji Basketball Association development officer said another objective achieved was that the competition was played at a very high level. The important thing for the federation is building a solid base. “I guess the next step for us is to put together an attractive package to attract overseas teams to our shores to participate in the event. “Another expectation that we feel we will need to do, is to run the game clock in quarters rather than in halves, although there is nothing wrong with games been played in two halves of 20 minutes. “I thought that the competition was played at a very high level,” he said. He said many people underestimated the depth of talent of the sport in the country, however, he felt that they had some of the best clubs in the region. “Development wise, it is very encouraging to witness minor teams begin to gauge the gap against traditional giant teams. “This was evident when a young Mighty Mights team from Raiwaqa and coached by National Under-20 women’s coach, Saula Koroi, almost beat Shaq Attaq and Lautoka giants, Vikings, in the men’s semifinals. “In the women’s competition, there is still a lot of room for improvement and it was very encouraging to welcome new teams to the event in the likes of Nadi All Stars and Mixed Kulture.”  A total of 26 teams participated in the five-day event which featured some of the best clubs in the country. Some new talents were discovered in particular, in the women’s competition. Koroi has been able to identify some players from the West. Furthermore, the competition was a great way to gauge players’ performances that are in the U20 women and men’s squad.
