Basketball goes Police way

The Police men’s and women’s basketball teams yesterday scooped the Ratu Sukuna Bowl basketball titles after beating Army in the finals at the Vodafone Arena.

In the women’s division, national rep Dale Wise led Police to beat Army 42-11 convincingly.

As for the men, the battle was tought, but in the end the men from Nasova held off their Army comrades 46-35 to win.

Speaking to SUNSports yesterday, Basketball Fiji development officer Lai Puamau said it was good to see basketball included in the Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition.

“We’re very happy to be involved because basketball is an alternative sport in the programme and they have been playing for about a month now,” Puamau said.

“It has always been rugby and netball and we thank the (Sukuna Bowl) committee for involving us.”

He said the Police basketball teams stood their ground in the finals yesterday because they have been playing basketball in the weekly Raiwaqa league competition.

“That is also new this year but it’s good to have the workforce participating in the sport.”

The Police men’s basketball team featured players who were already playing in the local basketball fraternity.

Jack Ting led the Police team while Army had a few senior officers, including 3FIR commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Jone Kalouniwai.
