QVS joins basketball

QUEEN Victoria School is one of the new schools that will play in the Suva Secondary School Basketball League this season.

As the Tuckers Ice-Cream sponsored league progresses into its second round, another four new schools had showed interest to join the competition.

QVS, Cathedral, Dudley High School and Nausori based Dilkusha High are additional teams while DAV Girls and Ratu Kadavulevu School have yet to confirm their participation.

Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said they had seen the growth of the sport at secondary level and hoped to continue the trend in the future.

"QVS and RKS are all boys' school and as we all know they mainly focus on rugby as their main sports. But to have them in the competition looks promising and I think the popularity of the sports is rising," Puamau said.

"It is very encouraging to see that the sport continues to grow."

Puamau said they needed to conduct more clinics at RKS before they could participate in the league. QVS is expected to start the league next week while RKS might feature within a fortnight's time.

The 15 schools participating in the Suva league will also feature in the National Secondary School Basketball Championship next month.

Defending boy's champion, Marist Brothers High School will defend their title in the under-15, U17 and U19 while Yat Sen Secondary, Saint Joseph's and Latter Day Saints are the title holders for the girl's U15, U17 and U19 grades.

"We are having this Suva league, just to build up the momentum. All teams will proceed to the next stage but we are doing this to give teams some game time before the main competition," Puamau said.
