Women's basketball team fly out to better finish

THE Fiji Basketball under-19 men's and women's teams jetted out of Nadi International Airport yesterday with the aim of making Fiji proud at the 2012 FIBA Oceania Youth Basketball tournament in Australia.

The teams, captained by Grace Taito (women) and Isireli Vuetibau (men), received last minute sponsorships from businesses which have boosted the morale of players.

The women's team face an uphill battle after being drawn with New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia. The side will be out to better their bronze medal finish in the last Oceania Youth tournament.

Women's coach and Basketball Fiji development officer Laisiasa Puamau said they were ready to put their bodies on the line.

"We have been preparing well for this tournament. Our aim is to treat each game as a final," he said.

"It is not going to be easy, I have huge faith in the players to deliver the goods."

The women's team play first game against Guam tomorrow. The side will face New Zealand on Tuesday and PNG on Wednesday.
