Raiwaqa starts competition

RAIWAQA Basketball started their super league at its famous Eds court in Raiwaqa yesterday.

Big guns like Boston, Mighty Mights and Veterans were part of the opening round of league.

However, Mighty Mights had a slow start to its 2013 campaign with a 16-22 loss to Golden Bati in one of the upsets of round one.

Boston Reds were in flying colours following a 10 baskets victory over Bryce 37-27.

Raiwaqa basketball official Peniasi Kainamoli "It was a good start to the super league, we had some good games and slowly we will build the momentum as the league will progress," he said.

In the women's division, Redz thumped Golden Bati 58-6 while Mystics edged Westy Stripe 23-19. Kainamoli said the Redz team was laced with national basketball under-19 reps that recently returned from the Oceania Youth Basketball Championship in Australia late last year.

"The women's competition started well too. The Redz played well with the junior national reps in their team. I believe speed and skills was essential in their win against Golden Bati," Kainamoli said.

Kainamoli's two daughters Tiana and Donnis Kainamoli played a huge role for the Redz triumph.

Results: Mighty Mights 16 Golden Bati 22 (M), Mystics 23 Westy Stripe19 (W), Redz 58 Golden Bati 6 (W), Boston (Red) 37 Bryce 27 (M), USP 37 Veterans 43 (M), Chosen 38 Lady Birds 34 (W), Saints Sparks WBD (W)
