Australian Opal here for Fiji basketball

Former Australian Opal, Annie La Fleur arrived today to help monitor the development of Basketball in Fiji.

Following a workshop in Australia in April, she will work closely with local development officer to promote the sport.

Basketball Fiji development officer, Laisiasa Puamau says with her expertise and new appointment as FIBA’s Oceania zone development officer, her visit proves timely.

“Annie comes from a very strong basketball background. She played for the Australia Opals (Australian Women’s Basketball team). She played in two world championships and also won a silver medal in the Olympic Games 2001 so we are looking forward to learning as much as we can from her while she’s here.”

As for La Fleur, travelling to Suva for the first time is something she hopes to make count during her short stay in Fiji.

“I’ve been in the job for 7 months so am travelling around the Pacific and looking to see how well the development officers are doing in their own countries. I think it’s a great opportunity for me to see what the working conditions are and see how I can help to make things get better.”

La Fleur with Puamau and the Basketball Fiji development team will be checking on schools playing in the secondary schools league today and tomorrow.
