JOHN Wesley College is the new boys champions in the under-19 grade of the Tuckers Ice Cream Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship. The Raiwaqa-based school edged Natabua High School 21-18 in an even affair during the final at the Vodafone Arena yesterday. 

Laced with Mighty Mights players, a club in the Raiwaqa Basketball Association, JWC created another piece of history — winning its first championship title. "We've been trying to win this for the past three years," team captain, Sydney Dukeleveny said. "I'm so happy with the win, it was not easy but the boys gave their best shot to come out victorious."

The team dedicated the win to one of the players, Jordan Dokanivalu, whose mum passed away last year.

"This win dedicated to Jordan and especially to all our supporters."

JWC upset defending champions Later Day Saints 26-20 in the quarter-finals.

Dukeleveny hope the performance of his players would boost their chances of making the Fiji U19 team to the FIBA Oceania Basketball Championship to be held in Suva at the end of the year. Meanwhile, in the girls division, Yat Sen Secondary School won the U19 title after a narrow 31-28 victory over arch rival Saint Joseph's Secondary School.

In other grades, SJSS won the U17 and the Grammar U15 girls won the U15 title.
