Grammar, John Wesley Crowned Winners

John Wesley College men’s and  Suva Grammar Under-19  teams  are champions of the 2015 Tuckers Ice Cream Fiji Secondary Schools championship which ended at the Vodafone Arena yesterday.

The Raiwai-based school JWC successfully defended their title after defeating Jai Narayan College to a close 28-25 match. Suva Grammar School defeated Natabua 22-19 to take home the shield.

In the U15 finals the girls from SGS proved themselves too strong to win the title defeating Latter Day Saints College 30-24. Marist won the U15 boys title defeating neighbors Yat Sen Secondary School 33-17. LDS dominated in both boys and girls category. LDS girls beat SGS 26 – 19 while on Court 2 LDS boys beat SGS 34 – 20.

Basketball Fiji development officer and national women’s coach Laisiasa Puamau acknowledged the schools for participating in the three days tourney which showcased spectacular  local young talents.

“We want to thank all the teachers and schools for participating this year, this is very positive on our development plans in schools. “Also our sponsors Goodman Fielder for coming in for their 7th year this year and sponsoring this tournament,” Puamau said.

Having new schools such as Swami Vivikenanda College in the competition was part of the development plans of the federation.

“Our plan was to bring in new school every year and we thank SVC for coming in,” he added.

  • U15 Boys; MBHS 16-8 SVC, YSS 20-17 LDS
  • U17 Girls; LDS 28-12 GHS, SGS 27-7 SJSS
  • U17 Boys; LDS 26-17 NHS,SGS 18-15 SVC
  • U19 Girls; SGS 29-16 ACS, NHS 22-16 LDS
  • U19 Boys; JWC 38-28 YSS, JNC 34-28 LDS
