Basketball Tournament Starts Today

Basketball Fiji’s four-day Easter tournament gets underway today. This tournament is to raise money to assist those affected by Cyclone Winston.

The tournament received a major boost yesterday after a sponsorship deal was struck with Powerade. Coca-Cola regional marketing manager, Lawrence Tikaram said the sponsorship this year consists of a package of $9000 whereby $3000 is cash and the rest are in kind.

“The Easter basketball tournament has a long history,” he said. “This year we were approached by Basketball Fiji to come on board and back them on a worthy course of supporting the efforts of the Prime Minister’s relief fund.”

Basketball Fiji treasurer, Ben Sikuri said they are targeting up to $6000 to go to the appeal and the rest would be channeled as prizes for the teams.

Sikuri confirmed that 26 teams are taking part- eight women and 18 men’s teams. Also competing is the North Bay Prospects, from the United States. North Bay Prospects player, Levaini Dominiko said they are excited to be in the country and to help out during this hard time.
