BASKETBALL ASSESSMENT TEAM STARTS OPERATIONS

The students have been drawn from the second year Exercise Physiology Course and will use the experience in 2008 to prepare for their practical assessment next year.  Lecturer Ravin Lal organised the students after an approach by Basketball Fiji to assist with the large amount of recording and assessment required in the NDP.
The Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Prof. Derek Gardiner has given his approval for the project as it will provide an excellent opportunity for the students to gain hands on experience.  “We have had students involved in similar practical situations in previous years”, Ravin said, “but not with basketball and looking at the NDP and all that it entails, our students will gain much valuable practical skill by being involved”, he added.

The students will be responsible for recording all the information from every player’s folder about resting heart rates, body weights, sleep patterns, quality of sleep, training willingness, muscle soreness and a whole lot more.  In addition they will also be responsible for recording the times in parts of the fitness programs undertaken by the players as well as assessing the strength program and recording the scores obtained.   The students will advise the Head Coaches of the squads on individual adjustments required to improve performances or to avoid over-training injuries.

The NDP Assessment Team comprises: Colati Bui, Mohammed Feroz, Mark Fung, Varanisese Gaunidali, Allison Gibson, Edward Heritage, William Koong, Elemaca Ravulo, Intaz Shah, Vilive Taginasedrau, Trevor Toka, Suliasi Tolotu (jnr) and Isimeli Vatuwaliwali.
