WESTERN schools enter the fray today at the secondary schools Twisties Basketball Championships in Suva.

The competition, which got under way on Saturday, saw the top bets stamping their mark in their respective grades.

Tournament coordinator and national rep Laisiasa Puamau said Lautoka's Natabua High School should put up strong resistance against Suva schools.

"It will be great competition and I expect Natabua to be a threat," Puamau said.

"There is an invitation for a development team to tour Hawaii and play the BYU and players at the championships have a chance to impress selectors.

"The development team will be selected from the league but at the same time players at school level have a chance of making the cut," Puamau said.

"This tour should happen in November."

The first upset of the tournament saw Latter Day Saints beat top seeds and favourites, International Secondary School in the Under-19 boys grade.

The Agnes Tuilevuka-coached LDS beat ISS, 36-32. ISS is mentored by former Fiji rep Jeff Colata.

In the U19 girls grade, defending champions Yat Sen Secondary School beat defeated Laucala Bay Secondary School 40-9 but should face stiff competition from Suva Grammar School, Latter Day Saints and Natabua.

In the U15 boys grade International was able to avenge their U19 boys team by beating rivals LDS 25-22, while Yat Sen defeated Laucala Bay Secondary School 31-17.

In the U15 girls, an impressive Yat Sen outfit defeated Saint Joseph 36 -7 and International defeated Suva Grammar 25 - 18.
