Senior AS State Championship Finals Preview

By Melissa Thomas

Day 2 of 4 McDonalds Hoop Time State Grand Finals was held on Tuesday November 25 at Dandenong Basketball Stadium for the Senior All Star Boys and Senior All Star Girls and although we did not determine State Champions, the process is well in place and we have two boys and two girls teams eagerly waiting for their opportunity to play on Hisense Arena in curtain raising games before CTI Melbourne United take on the New Zealand Breakers on Sunday December 14. The standard of basketball that was on displayed throughout the day was high and with some teams travelling long distances, Warrnambool, Mildura and Newborough to name a few it was great day had by all.

The boys had two Semi Finals the first between St Gabriel’s PS Traralgon and Eltham East. The game was close in the first half with St Gabriel’s taking a small 2 point margin into half time. The second half was a different story with St Gabriel’s coming home strong to take out the Semi Final 16-8 and book their school the chance to be crowned State Champions at Hisense Arena.

The second Semi was fought out between St Luke’s PS Wantirna and Our Lady of the Pines PS (OLOP) and in a close first half St Luke’s took a 10-6 lead into the half time break and after the break OLOP could only manage 2 points and with St Luke’s finishing strong they have reserved their spot in the State Championship decider with a 19-8 win.

The girls Semi Finals were a little closer with the first final being played between Serpell PS and Donburn PS. Although the half time score showed Donburn up 8-2 Serpell came out strong and scored and first 4 points of the second half but Donburn replied and held onto the early lead finishing the game on top 13-10  and securing a spot to play off of for the State Champions Title.

The second Semi for the girls got off to a slow start with the half time margin seeing Rowville PS leading 2-1 over St Catherine’s PS. After the slow start and a bit of a rev up from the coaches the girls took off in the second half and it was goal for goal for most of the half until Rowville slipped away at the end claiming a 10-14 victory which will take them to Hisense Arena on December 14 to play off in the State Champions Grand Final.
