Redbacks and Hawks split wins to close the round (Week 16 Sunday SBL wrap)

THE Perry Lakes Hawks men scored a crucial win on the back of another big game from Bryton Hobbs to keep their playoff hopes alive on Sunday while the Perth Redbacks started the day with a nine-point victory over the Lady Hawks.

In the women's match on Sunday afternoon, the Perth Redbacks came away with a 63-54 victory over the Perry Lakes Hawks at Bendat Basketball Centre.

In the only men's contest on Sunday, the Perry Lakes Hawks beat the Perth Redbacks 121-116 at Bendat Basketball Centre.

Starting with the women's clash, the Redbacks ended their five-game losing streak by downing the Hawks by nine points in a result that continues to leave Perry Lakes vulnerable inside the top eight.

Perth might be out of the playoff hunt but played well to win by nine points and improve to a 4-14 record after losing its last five matches, while Perry Lakes now sits at 7-11 just ahead of the 5-12 East Perth Eagles who sit in ninth position.

Jess Jakens had a terrific game for the Redbacks with one of her biggest performances of the season to finish with 24 points, 13 rebounds and four steals.

Gaby Clayton added 10 points, three assists, three rebounds and three steals for Perth while Gabby O'Sullivan contributed seven points and seven boards, and Lauren Hall six points and eight rebounds.

Sarah Donovan top-scored for the Hawks with 14 points and 12 rebounds shooting 6-of-10 from the field.

Kassi Conditt also finished with 13 points, three rebounds and two steals for Perry Lakes with Lauren Jeffers contributing 12 points and four assists, and Danika Pisconeri 10 points and five boards.

And in the men's contest, the Hawks scored a crucial five-point victory in a high-scoring thriller over the Redbacks that keeps their playoff hopes alive following a loss on Friday night to the South West Slammers.

As a result of the win, the Hawks improve to an 8-13 record to be two games behind the eighth placed Goldfields Giants who are 10-11. Meanwhile, the Redbacks couldn’t quite back up their win over the Willetton Tigers on Saturday night to slip further out of the playoff hunt at 7-14.

Bryton Hobbs did all he possibly could to ensure the Hawks got over the line finishing with 46 points, 10 assists and six rebounds while shooting 16-of-25 from the floor, 5-of-12 from beyond the arc and 9-of-10 from the foul line.

Ben Purser contributed 21 points and nine rebounds for Perry Lakes with Josh Garlepp adding 19 points, Rob Cassir 14 and Ryan Smith 11.

Ray Turner had a huge afternoon for the Redbacks with 39 points and 19 rebounds on the back of shooting 15-of-26 from the field and 9-of-14 from the free-throw line, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Joel Wagner added 17 points and eight assists for Perth while Raphiael Putney contributed 15 points, nine boards and two blocked shots, Ben Smith 15 points, and Marshall Nelson 10.
