Round 1: Day 3 Wrap

Game 8: Victoria v Minecraft Comets

Victoria extended their unbeaten record in 2013 with a comfortable win against a competitive Comets to kick off the final day of games in round 1.

The Victorians kept the score table busy with four players reaching double figures. Leanne Del Toso continued her great start to the season leading all scorers with 19, while Shelley Chaplin (18), Cobi Crispin (16) and Alice Hammond (12) rounded out the top scorers for Victoria. Two games in a row will be a tough ask for the Victorian team as they now have to play a second game with no rest against the unbeaten Be Active Western Stars.

Shooting percentage again the worry for the Comets, shooting at just 23% but they can take a lot of positives away from round 1. They have been ultra-competitive against some of the league’s best. Despite being winless for the round, the Comets have showed marked improvement are easily the most improved team in the WNWBL. With Mel Hall still to return from injury, I wouldn’t write the Comets off just yet.

Game 9: Be Active Western Stars v Victoria

No rest no worries for the Victorian team as they took round one honours against the Be Active Western Stars 60-49 to keep their undefeated record intact.

The big three for Victoria again did all the damage but it was their defensive effort that was the difference in the end. The stats suggest that the Stars shot poorly but what the box score won’t show you is where the Stars were forced to take their shots from. You could have expected after playing two games in a row that the Victorians would have tired, but it was quite the opposite, putting the result beyond doubt mid-way through the fourth.

A special mention to Lynne Panayiotis who scored her first points in the WNWBL.

The Stars generated 15 more scoring opportunities than their opponents but weren’t able to convert. Despite hitting the lead mid-way through the third quarter, a 33% shooting percentage won’t win you too many games in the WNWBL. Amber Merritt dominated again for the Stars scoring her 120th point for the round in a huge weekend of offense.

Game 10: Sydney Uni Flames v Stacks Goudkamps Bears

The final game of the first round of the WNWBL was an all Sydney affair with the Bears bouncing back from a disappointing Saturday to take the points against their cross city rivals 57-40.

The Flames got the jump on the Bears leading for most of the first quarter but it wasn’t long before the Bear’s talls gained the ascendancy. Kylie Gauci made it look like the Flames defence was standing still at times with her speed and agility through the keyway, bringing her teammates into the game dishing out a game high six assists. O’Kelly Kennedy and Amimoto both had double-doubles in the win and it’s safe to say that the Bears have found a player in Georgia Munro-Cook who impressed all weekend long.

Katie Hill top scored for the Flames with 14 and Caitlin De Wit easily played her best game of the weekend scoring eight points and adding eight rebounds to her tally.

Both Sydney teams finish round one in the top four with the Bears in third and the Sydney Uni Flames locked into fourth.
