Round 2 Wrap: By The Numbers

511: After round 2 the Be Active Western Stars have scored 511 points. As the old adage goes, ‘defence wins championships’, but people come to watch offence. The Stars are the highest scoring team for round two, on track to score over 1,000 regular season points and I would wager a guess that this would be the first time this would have ever happened in the WNWBL.

35: Amber Merritt averaged 35 points per game in round two which included the top three individual scoring performances for the round (43, 41 and 32). Now averaging more than 10 points per game more than the league’s second highest point scorer (Bridie Kean), it’s maybe no coincidence that the league’s highest point scorer also plays in the team with the WNWBL’s two premier low pointers; Clare Nott and Sarah Vinci.

30: The Stacks Goudkamp Bears held the Be Active Western Stars to just 30 points on their way to an undefeated round of basketball. Statistically the Bears are the best defensive team in the league conceding the least amount of points in 2013. If the aforementioned saying is true in that; ‘defence wins championships’ then we could be looking at our 2013 champions.

13: Sarah Stewart now leads the league in rebounds averaging 13 per game. There wouldn’t be too many players in the world classified as a 3.0 that could lay claim to such a statistic and it’s her basketball smarts as much as her height that see her lead the WNWBL’s rebound count after two rounds.

6: The Minecraft Comets were just six minutes away from claiming their first win of 2013 in Saturday’s game against the Sydney Uni Flames. Trailing at quarter time, the Comets fought back to level it at the half and then take a narrow lead into the three quarter time break. With just under six minutes remaining, a Sarah Stewart two pointer, with the bonus, gave the Flames a one point lead which they never surrendered.

4: After two rounds of WNWBL action there are four players in the league that are currently averaging double-doubles; Amber Merritt (Be Active Western Stars), Bridie Kean (Minecraft Comets), Sarah Stewart (Sydney Uni Flames) and Cobi Crispin (Victoria).

3: Victoria’s three pronged attack is the best in the league. Shelley Chaplin, Leanne Del Toso and Cobi Crispin are all averaging 16 points per game and despite dropping two games in round two to now share the top of the table with the Stars and the Bears; Victoria remains the toughest team to defend.

1: The entire WNWBL held one collective breath when Gliders captain Bridie Kean fell backwards out of her chair in a freak accident. The game was abandoned as Bridie was unable to be moved until the ambulance arrived. We are reminded that at times, wheelchair basketball can be a brutal game and the entire wheelchair basketball community will be wishing Bridie all the best for a speedy recovery.

0: I have absolutely zero clue as to who will win the 2013 WNWBL championship. After the Be Active Western Stars defeated Victoria on Saturday morning, I’d scrubbed out Victoria and pencilled in the Stars as 2013 favourites only to find myself once again looking for an eraser only hours later as the Bears put on a defence clinic to defeat Stars that afternoon. The Bears also went on to beat Victoria the following morning meaning we now see a three way tie atop the WNWBL ladder at the half way point of the season.
