Merritt Inspires Gliders to Win Over France

The Australian Gliders women’s wheelchair basketball national team have made it back-to-back victories at the 2014 IWBF Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championships, defeating France 59-47 overnight.

Gliders young star Amber Merritt was the standout for the Paralympic silver medallists, posting a game-high 27 points to go with nine rebounds in a brilliant performance from the 21-year-old.

It was a memorable game for the West Australian, overcome a first half shooting slump (3-of-10 FG) to post 18 points after the interval and inspire the Gliders to a vital pool win.

Merritt found support in the form of Shelley Chaplin (nine points and eight assists) and Cobi Crispin (six points and eight rebounds) to help the Gliders overcome a quarter time deficit.

It was an opening period dominated by defensive pressure from both teams, with the French holding a 10-7 advantage.

This lead did not last long into the second quarter as the Gliders began to make inroads through the French rear-guard, holding a 21-17 lead at the main break.

A more open contest ensued after the restart, with the Gliders always able to keep their noses in front of a determined French team to push the lead beyond 10 points at the final buzzer.

Next up for the Australian Gliders is Mexico on Tuesday at 5:00am AEST, with fans able to watch the game LIVE online at http://2014wheelchairbasketball.com/connect/watch-the-games-live.
